Our History

Although the birth of Citiside recently occurred in 2000; its roots are deeply embedded in golf. Golf was invented over 500 years ago in Scotland. The game was played on the links or on linksland. All people, not just men of leisure, found time to play golf. Golf finally came to Charlotte in 1911. Eastwood Golf Course, an 18-hole course opened in 1947 near the intersection of The Plaza and Eastway Drive. That’s right! It’s where Citiside is today.  The course sat on approximately 110 acres just outside of Uptown between 1947 and 1999. The history of Eastwood not only shows the personal and impersonal forces involved in the evolution of a golf course, but also the ways in which a space can have different meanings to so many people.

Donald Ross, father of golf course architecture, believed "there is no good reason why the label 'a rich man's game' should be hung on golf." Eastwood Golf Course brought a splash of color. Above all, the course was made available to working, middle-class Charlotteans. The course was always well known for attracting a diverse, golf-loving clientele. Eastwood may have an occasional celebrity like Willie Nelson or Reba McIntyre pass through. And for years the course earned a reputation as being the “P.T. Barnum” of golf. Golfers tried all kinds of stunts; playing shots off the clubhouse roof, playing with a lacrosse stick, or playing in their swimming trunks. It was apparent Eastwood Golf Course was a fun place for everyone.

Eastwood Golf Course changed over the years and these changes would partially contribute to the course's next chapter. Train whistles and car horns were golfers' prime distractions. The neighborhood became dense with middle-class apartments and housing as well as commercial areas. A gas station sat near the 10th green and a Bojangle’s restaurant across from the 11th tee. This bustling growth became too much for Eastwood Golf Course to compete with.

The beloved golf course began a new chapter on January 15, 2000 transitioning ownership to Citiside Builders and Mulvaney Properties. Developers embraced its history and made golf their theme throughout Citiside.  Our streets are in honor of golfers like Phil O’Neil. Our apartment homes pay homage to game origins, The Links at Citiside. Our pool clubhouse has charm and presence of a golf clubhouse adorned with clock tower. Our three ponds that were once  water hazards are now relaxing retreats to watch nature and fish.  Our neighborhood continues to adapt; we have a nearby park, access to CATS, and soon-to-be LYNX rail station.  Most importantly, the Citiside HOA Board of Directors and Association Manager are dedicated to keeping Citiside fun, safe and appealing.

Welcome to Citiside.
